It was a hot October day and the Rio Hondo women's soccer team was in the middle of a battle for first place against Chaffey College. This was a grudge match, Chaffey had previously defeated RHC 6-0 and the Roadrunners were not about to let that happen again. Before the game, coach, Jennifer Tanaka spoke to the girls about everyone putting in their effort and doing their work because in the end whoever plays with the biggest heart comes out with the win. This really spoke out to Jessica Ortiz, who came up big in the game with the only goal of the match, leading RHC to a victory over Chaffey (1-0).
It couldn't have been scripted any better, having the first and third place team competing for a victory that will catapult the winner into a possible Foothill Conference Championship. Rio Hondo (10-4-2) hosted San Bernardino Valley College (11-4-2) and continued their unbeaten streak with a 1-1 tie on sophomore appreciation day, Nov 1.
Rio Hondo men's soccer team finished the season on a positive note on Nov. 1, against San Bernardino Valley with a 2-0 home victory. The victory leaves the men's team with a possible playoff berth for CCCAA Southern California Regional Championship. Rio scored the first goal in less than fifteen minutes into the game.
Rio Hondo's men's soccer team played one of their best games against Chaffey College on Oct. 18, according to their coach. They had two straight Foothill Conference loses coming into this game. However, they were able to turn things around by defeating Chaffey 5-2. Rio Hondo was leading 2-1 going into the second half. Rio was able to keep the momentum going and went on to score three more goals.
Rio Hondo claimed first place in the Foothill Conference on Oct. 18 by defeating Chaffey College 1-0. This game was important to Rio because they had previously lost to Chaffey 6-0 in their opening conference game. Since then, the Roadrunners have been putting in work by going on a six game winning streak and all of them resulting in shutouts.
The October temperature has finally settled in Southern California with a reminder of how cruel fall weather is to outdoor sports. Morning and afternoon practices at 50 degree weather, playing games in the rain, and falling on ice-cold field pitches that resemble concrete are a constant reminder of the physical strain the body endures.
The lady roadrunners of the Rio Hondo Women's Soccer team are holding their annual recycling fundraiser to help the fight against cancer from Oct. 10 until Oct. 14.
Captain Hernandez speaks out
Heather Hernandez is a sophomore on the Rio Hondo women's soccer team, but this is her first year as the captain. She has been providing an aggressive attack on the midfield by scoring goals and providing assists. However, she is humble with her success and is just looking to improve not only her own game, but her teammates as well.
The lady Roadrunners recorded back to back conference wins with a 1-0 shutout over Victory Valley on Sept. 30. Lily Gama gave the Roadrunners the much deserved lead in the 82nd minute. The best scoring opportunity in the first half came in the 28th minute when Annabel Carillo's header went inches over the crossbar.
The Roadrunners suffered another home loss to Victory Valley 1-0, on Sept. 30. Rio Hondo College is now 1-1-1 in Foothill Conference play and will travel next to San Bernardino Valley College and face off against the Wolverines who have accumulated ten total wins in conference and non-conference match-ups.
The lady roadrunners are eight games into the season and took on Glendale College on Sept. 13. Rio Hondo showed signs of promise with a 1-0 victory and summed up back to back wins heading into conference play Sept. 23 on the road against Chaffey College.
The Rio Hondo's men's soccer team started their season on the right foot with a 2-1 victory over Santa Ana College Aug. 30. The roadrunners displayed an attacking mentality for a majority of the first half. However, Rio Hondo was not able to get through the defensive wall set up by Santa Ana.
