Open house for H.S. Tech students

Last Friday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. the technology quad was filled with high school students.

The occasion was that the technology department here at Rio Hondo held an open house to local high school students at schools that have technological programs similar to Rio Hondo's.

Scholarships were to be distributed to some students as well as a free lunch to all.

The technology department includes drafting, G.I.S., civil engineering, alternative and sustainable energy, and the Honda and heavy machinery programs.

A total of twenty-one $1000 scholarships were offered to a handful of qualifying graduating seniors from high schools in the area, and only about seventy percent take them said John Frala, director of one of the programs.

The event was attended by students as well as various teachers and counselors from their schools.

The annual events purpose is to inform the community of the potential careers out there in these particular fields and to offer help entering them, a sort of personal guidance for ready to graduate high school students.

In addition to being an informative meeting it was a strong outreach to the community which aimed to enlighten them on these programs and the possibilities available to them when involved in these fields.

"We want them (the community) to know that they have options in these areas" said Frala.

Aside from all the amounts of free information and free money, there was free lunch for everyone.

This was no small lunch either, there was Subway sandwiches, a drink, a bag of chips, and a slice of pizza for each and every attendee.

This event opened the doors to these programs and did so graciously as well as in an informative fashion.
