As the tennis season is slowly coming to an end, the Rio Hondo women's team has truly exceeded expectations. The team has defeated all of the colleges in their conference including Antelope Valley, Mt. San Jacinto, Victor Valley College, and College of the Desert.
The team was supposed to be pronounced the Foothill Conference Champions, however, after a controversial call made by the COD coach, the championship will now be shared between Rio Hondo and College of the Desert.
The team played the Foothill Conference Tournament on April 13 at the Monterey Country Club in Palm Desert where all members of the team had an opportunity to play against all players from the other colleges in their league.
Representing Rio was number one doubles duo, Jessica Guerrero and Nancy Duong played a very impressive two sets victory of 6-0 and 6-0, qualifying to regionals.
Number two doubles duo, Janine Velasquez and Lareina Morales won their doubles sets 6-0, 6-2 qualifying them both to compete in regionals.
The number three doubles duo Malea Meza and Alexis Delgado, played against the AVC number one doubles team and loss 7-5.
Number three singles player, Velasquez played against the number three seed in the entire conference, almost qualifying for regionals in singles but ended her set in a loss of 8-3.
Number two singles player, Duong won her sets 6-3, 7-5, qualifying for regionals in singles.
Number one singles player, Guerrero, won her first pro-set 8-1, and played against Rio player Delgado in a victory of 6-0, 6-0, qualifying for regionals in singles as well.
Concluding the conference tournament, Rio will have Guerrero and Duong, as well as Velasquez and Morales competing in regionals for doubles.
Guerrero and Duong will also be competing individually for singles at regionals.
Regionals is scheduled to be on May 3 and will be hosted in Palm Desert.
The team will also be attending the Ojai Tournament this weekend from April 25-27, and will compete against other colleges outside of their league.
