Basketball season is just around the corner and the Rio Hondo College men's team is practicing, preparing, and anticipating the chance to show what they can do on the court. This year's team is youthful, with a roster comprised of 14 freshmen and only one sophomore in 6-7 Center Dusty Simcox.
Once again it was a long but worthwhile journey to Barstow Sportspark this past Wednesday for the young and hungry Rio Hondo cross country teams to compete in the Foothill Conference Championships where the men placed first and women second, respectively. The Roadrunner women's cross country team led things off by grabbing their first Foothill Conference title in five years.
Traveling is included in the job title for the Rio Hondo men's wrestling team which continued its dominance at the North-South All Star meet at the Embassy Suites in Monterey the weekend of Oct. 25. Rio Hondo held the fort for the South All Stars as both Rio Hondo wrestlers won their matches.
It may have taken a while but the Rio Hondo women's water polo team finally put it all together and got a win last Tuesday at home against non-South Coast Conference opponent Santa Monica City College 8-6. Santa Monica's team held a record of 1-25-0 but was no pushover due to the competition they face yearly in the Western State Conference.
The Rio Hondo Women's Soccer Team forced a 0-0 tie in a home game against Foothill Conference opponent Mt. San Jacinto on Tuesday Oct.28. The match was a good defensive display, lead by a cohesive team effort and a great performance from stand out Goalie Amanda Garza.
With the 2008 Major League Baseball season all wrapped up, it was a magical season to say the least for Evan Longoria and the Tampa Bay Rays. In the third baseman's rookie campaign, Longoria posted exceptional numbers with a .272 batting average, 27 home runs, and 85 runs batted in.
