Men's Basketball team looking at positive season

The Rio Hondo Men's basketball team is training hard for their upcoming home game against East Los Angeles College on Thursday Nov. 24.

Coach Steve Herbert feels confident about this season saying, "I work with a good group of players." Newcomer Dewayne O'Neal says, "I feel good about the season." which he feels the team is going through the right path to win. Forward William Smith says that this year the team has more depth saying: " we're trying to put Rio Hondo on the map as basketball goes," which looks like the Roadrunners are going to be playing with a chip on their shoulder this season.

Incoming freshman for this season include 6'1'' Justin Elliot, 6'2'' Stephan Steward, 6'5''Treyvon McNutt, 6'2'' Willie Duff, 6'2''Jacob Garcia and 6'7'' Dewayne O'Neal. Returning players include shooting guard Darryl Alexander, shooting guard Nathan Mohri, and shooting guard Maurice Cole.

When asked about the season Maurice Cole said, "everyone is working hard and we look forward to playing against San Bernardino." Shooting guard Nathan Mohri expressed confidence when asked about the upcoming season saying, "we are proving our selves coming out of a disappointing season, every game is important and we are prepared to play" and encourage fans to attend the games this year.

Coach Herbert said that the goal for the team is to make it through the Foothill Conference. He encourages fans to attend the home game on Nov. 24. Coach Herbert encourages fans to bring a new unwrapped toy to donate for the Toys for Tots program where the Marine reserve of Pico Rivera will be there at the gym to receive the toys. Those who bring the unwrapped toys will get into this game and the Rio Hondo woman's basketball game against Bakersfield for free.

The Roadrunners will travel to San Diego for the Grossmont tournament on Dec. 4-6, and will come back home as they host the Rio Hondo Tournament on Dec. 9-11. After the Rio Hondo Tournament the Roadrunners will be making appearances in the Glendale and Hancock Tournaments. Right after those tournaments the Roadrunners will be starting Foothill Conference play on Jan. 6 at College of the Desert.
