Following the involuntary medical leave of Communications Secretary Patricia Alvarez a few weeks ago, members of Rio Hondo's Board of Trustees listened to concerned staff and community members regarding staff morale and Alvarez's future. Dr. Ted Martinez led a discussion with members of the Rio Hondo staff and local Whittier superintendents on ways to better prepare students for the transition into college culture on Nov. 10. Once everyone had a plate of food and sat down the conversation immediately turned to the fiscal restraints that all California schools have recently been facing.… Post the First Comment

In response to the early 2009 "warning" issued by the Accreditation Commission of Community and Junior Colleges (AACJC) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), Rio Hondo submitted the much anticipated Follow-up Report on Oct 15. By submitting the 54 page report, Rio Hondo has effectively complied with all requests made by the governing body and the college should be removed from "warning" status and placed on "Reaffirmed Accreditation" status by the spring semester in 2010.… Post the First Comment

On December 5th the Inspired Gay Straight Bisexual Youth (IGSBY) will host the third annual Pride and Education conference at Rio Hondo College. The conference will give an opportunity for supporters of gay, lesbian, transgender and straight youth to convene and support their plight as well as provide self knowledge for attendees and supporters.… Post the First Comment

Rio Hondo hosted a "Financial Literacy Workshop" on Nov. 18 that was filled with useful information on how to get out of debt and how to budget your finances. Steven Valdez and Sheila Shanker, both Certified Public Accountants, shared helpful tips in money management and it begins with setting clear goals.… Post the First Comment

In an act of outreach to the student body and to the staff, President/Superintendent Dr. Ted Martinez plans to hold another "Talk With the President" event. "Dr. Martinez calls this activity a 'listening outpost.' The webcast of the Women's Conference '09 was shown in the new library in LRC 128 on Monday Nov. 2 which started at 12:30 p.m. It was an amazing inspirational conference for modern women and about women.
