The Whittier Community Theater presents "A Nice Family Gathering," just in time for the holidays. "A Nice Family Gathering," is a play written by Phil Olson based on a typical dysfunctional family gathering for the annual Thanksgiving dinner. No holiday dinner is complete without the drama that is always involved. Carl an aspiring and struggling writer heads back home to visit his family which consists of the successful older brother, the little sister who's always left out and the mom who is as nutty as they come.
Rio Hondo's Art and Cultural Program will be presenting Eurydice directed by Liesel Euler next month. Eurydice is a timeless love story with contemporary characters and ingenious plot twists. The play is based on the classical myth of Orpheus a legendary musician, poet, and prophet to the Greek Gods who had the ability to charm all living things and even stones with his beautiful music.
Rio Hondo's division of the Art and Cultural program presented Frank and friends Nov. 8 at the Wray Theater. RHC faculty members Frank Accardo and Blanca De Los Santos collaborated along with students Felipe Lara, David Smith and Alumni Juan Sixto. The evening was filled with a variety of acoustic guitar music: western classical, romantic lyricism, folk music,Romanic style, Viennese classic style, and "moto perpetuo" style.
Rio Hondo's Arts and Cultural Program presented a one act play festival Oct. 6-8 at the Black Box Theater. The event was an evening filled with ten minute plays written, performed and directed by Rio Hondo students. The festival was a developmental project that the students had been working on since the spring semester. The diversity in each act was clearly notable having a variety of genres for each act to keep the audience wanting and expecting more.

Rio Hondo students performed a variety of classic Broadway selections. They performed in small groups, and sometimes a few went on stage solo.

Being one of the last remaining playhouses in Southern California the Whittier Community Theater celebrates its 90th season this year. Whittier Community Theater begins its season with "Good News." "Good News" is a show from 1927 that introduces what college life was like in the 1920s. Having just begun co-ed schooling at colleges makes for the great shenanigans that are portrayed in "Good News;" colleges were focused more on their football teams and athletic programs, while youngsters were still getting their "drink" on.
Special Tribute to Sept.11 attacks will be performed at the Black Box Theater the day after the 10th Anniversary.
