    Emotions were running high at Rio Hondo’s Wray Theatre during the opening of “Anna in the Tropics” by Nilo Cruz on Thursday, April 19. Rio Hondo students performed an enticing play that touched on controversial topics of struggling relationships, betrayal, and the hardships that develop in a family owned business.

    Rio Hondo's Arts and Cultural program will be presenting a Faculty Art Show January 5, through February 24, 2012. There will be a reception and artist talk Monday, Feb 13, at 7p.m. The Faculty Art Show is a FREE exhibit located in the Rio Hondo Art Gallery. The Rio Hondo Art Gallery is found in the Business building, room B-13 and consists of remarkable art work.

    The Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana is showcasing a Star Wars exhibit from now until April 15.

    This exhibit is a great place for both adults and young children to visit and not only see everything to do with Star Wars but also to learn a thing or two. I visited the exhibit and I have to say even though I'm not exactly a Star Wars fan it was one of the most interesting experiences I have had in a while.

    The Hillcrest Festival is back

    It's back and given its circumstances could be better than any other before it, the Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts.  For 52 years and counting, this art festival has been one of the most awaited art displays in the Los Angeles and Orange counties. In a festival having displayed over 200 artists in its history, art such as ceramics, photography, watercolors, and much more are put on display for all to enjoy. This particular year may peak many students' interests due to its great connection with Rio Hondo.

    A king will fall

    A king will fall this Sunday, February 19. This is when the curtain closes on the superb The King of the Desert, which has been playing at Casa 0101 in Boyle Heights since January.

    Actor Rene Rivera stars in this exceptional one-man show written by Stacey Martino. Under Sal Romeo's keen direction, the play chronicles the journey of a Mexican American man from boyhood to adulthood.

  • Rio locals in Whittier’s production of ‘Office Hours’

     

    Former Rio Hondo Theater student Rosalva Reza and staff employee Julie Breihan have major roles in Whittier Community Theatre's production of the comedy, "Office Hours" which opens Feb. 17 in the Whittier Center Theater, 7630 S. Washington Ave. The production, directed by Susan Marx and produced by Richard DeVicariis, will run three consecutive weekends through March 3.

    The students and faculty  will be pleased to know that Rio Hondo is holding the 13th Annual Journal of Art and Literature River's Voice for a shot at having their work(s) published. The River's Voice is a journal of art and literature published at Rio Hondo by the Communications and Languages Division, Arts and Cultural Programs Division. It will be edited by Professor James Mathis.

  • Twelve Rio students travel to Utah for regional acting competition

    Twelve Rio Hondo students traveled to the Irene Ryan Acting Competition on Feb. 6 at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in Ogden, Utah for one week.

    The students prepared two scenes and a monologue to perform as part of the competition. Of these 12 students, six students were nominated either from a respondent of the Kennedy Festival or a director of one of the plays they performed in at Rio Hondo. Each nominee is given the opportunity to pick their partner for the event.

    The Lucky One is a romantic drama film that stars Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, and Blythe Danner and was released on April 20.

  • ‘Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace’ in 3D

    George Lucas is back with the re-release of "Star Wars: Episode 1, The Phantom Menace." "The Phantom Menace" was originally released in 1999 and is back in theaters as of February 10, 2012 in 3D. In its opening weekend it has made an estimated 25.2 million adding to its already opulent franchise.

  • Action-filled, thriller ‘Safe House’ has audiences at the edge of their seat

    Safe House is a new film starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds released Feb. 10.

    Most of the movie was shot primarily in Cape Town, South Africa. Director, Daniel Espinosa wanted the film to be as authentic and real as possible, so many of the scenes were filmed in real settings without any green screen, in studios. Hardly any CGI was used in the shooting of the film.

  • ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’

    "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," is an exciting, thriller and a family film all in one.  It stars Dwayne Johnson also known as the rock (Hank), Michael Caine (Alexander), Josh Hutcherson (Sean), Vanessa Hudgens (Kailani), Luis Guzman (Gabato) and Kristin Davis (Liz). The film was directed by Brad Peyton; the writers of the film were Brian and Mark Gunn.

  • Action, just action

     

    Denzel Washington (Tobin Frost) and Ryan Reynolds (Matt Weston) combine their outstanding talents to create what could be best described as a mediocre film. "Safe House" provides what one would expect from watching the previews, a two hour extended cat and mouse chase scene. The film's plot is based around Tobin Frost turning himself in after years of selling government secrets, but the safe house he is in is attacked. This leads to Matt Weston, the rookie operative, to be forced to escape with the crook and remain alive. 

  • ‘Woman in Black’ possesses the audience

     

    "Woman in Black", released by CBS Films, hit theaters February 3. Starring former Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, the film had hype from the get-go due to it being his first film since the famous wizarding franchise. The terrifying motion picture had a budget of $12 million, and in its opening weekend grossed an estimated $21 million on this Superbowl weekend. It may have come in second behind "Chronicle", but it certainly outperformed the original predictions and could eventually surpass "Chronicle" in terms of longevity.

    Contraband hits the big screen

     

    Mark Wahlberg hits hard with a fantastic role in the action film Contraband after starring in The Fighter and The Other Guys in 2010. It's time for him to teach his brother-in-law a lesson for messing with the wrong person. Not only is he going on a journey, but he's putting his family in danger and leaving his best friend in charge, who isn't the guy who he pretends to be. 

  • ‘Man on a Ledge’ tries too hard

     

    Man on a Ledge was released in theaters on January 27, and in its opening weekend has made an estimated $7.2 million. With stars such as Sam Worthington, from movies such as Clash of the Titans and Terminator Salvation, Elizabeth Banks, and Jamie Bell, the movie sought out to be a smashing heist/thriller blockbuster. However, with several twists trying to be tied together to result in audiences being left on the "ledge of their seat" just left people shaking their heads.

  • “Red Tails” crash lands into theaters

    The Tuskegee airmen changed American history, contributing to major reforms and civil rights. "Red Tails", however, butchers that history to bring us a plot-driven, vehicle hosting, grand animated antics.

    The 332nd fighter group, the Tuskegee airmen, was part of a U.S. Army air corps program to measure IQ, dexterity, and leadership qualities for all their units. The military was segregated but the program included the 332nd fighter group, a group consisting only of blacks.
