Board member Gary Mendez, who is seeking re-election at the Nov. 6 election, told El Paisano in a letter Wednesday that former President/ Superintendent Dr. Rose Marie Joyce "was forced to retire due to poor performance and creating a hostile environment on campus" and that his outburst with her happened after she "signed her resignation papers." Dr. Joyce announced her intent to retire in October and the college began a search for a new president right away. Neither Dr. Joyce nor college officials ever indicated that she was "forced" to retire or that she was leaving because of " poor performance."

Mendez and Joyce got into a shouting match during the summer of 2006 where Mendez was said to have used curse words at the President.

Mendez was later stripped of his Board Presidency and was censored by his fellow Board members.

But Mendez told El Paisano that Dr. Joyce used "swear words and curses, but only one side was written in the paper.
